New Rules

We've been working on these for a while now and have decided to put them up, finally.
They have been worked off of the old rules, with just a few more that we thought were needed to be written down.
Sadly, we've removed the ones that were meant to be taken in gest as some people decided to use them as excuses.

The new rules are as follows:

* You must be 16 or older to play (that's to register and join in!)
- Why do we ask this? Because the forums facilitate real-life meets, for your safety we ask that you only sign up if you're over 16.
- If you join up under the age of 16 with your real birth date and we find out, we'll suspend the account until your 16th birthday.
- If you join up under the age of 16 with a fake birth date and we find out, we'll suspend the account for at least a year (depending on how old we determine you to really be) in increments of one year, and when your suspension is lifted you won't be able to post until you change it to your real birthday.
- Do not fake your age even if you're over 16. We may ask for proof of ID before returning your account.

General rules;
1. Do not create secondary accounts. You only need one account, as you are only one person.
2. Debate is encouraged but flame wars are not.
3. Swearing is allowed with moderation, but do not aim it at others.
4. Do not spam, go wildly off-topic or post an identical topic of one recently closed by the staff.
5. Engaging in chat-style, one-sentence posts is frowned upon, but not prohibited. This style of posting is only really acceptable in the Spam and Forum Games section.
6. Use the search function before posting a new topic and only 'bump up' an old topic if your post adds something to the subject.
7. Do not post sexist, racist, homophobic or any other hateful material.
8. Trolling is not permitted. Any instances of trolling will be dealt with as swiftly, succinctly and soundly as possible.
9. Do not harass any member of this site and be civil to everyone, even if you don't like them.
10. Do not deface the board, post malicious code, post links to malicious websites or otherwise attempt to annoy other members and screw with their equipment.
11. Do not promote, advertise or encourage illegal activity including piracy and drug taking on these boards.
12. Do not post adult materials or websites in any message in this forum.
13. Do not come here looking for a partner or sex tips. There are other websites for that; we're here to get people talking together.
14. Do not abuse the report to moderator function for banal reasons, repeat offenders will be chastised and/or reprimanded depending on the nature of the abuse.
15. The staff are here to make things run smoothly, not to sort out your personal issues with other persons.
16. If a staff member asks you to do/stop doing something, do so immediately.
17. We will decide whether you're breaking any of these rules, not you.
18. Attempt to have fun despite how horribly demanding we are.

Is that so horrible?

New Moderators

We are pleased to announce that in the wee hours of the morning, the forum gave birth to two new moderators: Bai and Stinkyspots.

We trust that they will grow into fully fledged members of the moderating team when they are weaned off their probation in a few months time. Please be welcoming and accomodating as they find their feet and trust that they will do a good job to keep the boards running smoothly for your continued enjoyment.

Any queries can be directed to this thread where the discussion is.

Calendar

Forum Calendar

As some of you are aware, there is a calendar at the top right corner of the forum, here you can find out what's going on in the fandom throughout the year. It displays member's birthdays, meets, events and conventions.

If you are organising something this is another way to publicise it on the forum, which can be linked to your event thread. It is an easy function to use but remember this feature is for public events, not home parties.

We have recently made some changes to how the system works so that now all members can create events. These will be shown at the bottom of the main forum page under "Upcoming events in the next 7 days" and within the main calendar. However, if we find members abusing this system they will be dealt with.

There are three main choices when creating an event to the calendar: 'Add New Single Event', 'Add New Ranged Event' and 'Add Recurring Event'. Single event would be a single day event, ranged event is for multiple planned days for an event or convention while recurring event is for regular events you wish to link add at once. When you have selected the appropriate choice just complete the details (title, time, information, inserting a link to your associated thread) before posting to the community calendar.

You can also use this feature to add events to a personal calendar that will only be shown on your calendar by selecting Personal event under the "Type of Event" section.

Warning Matrix

This is the matrix we use to issue warnings to people. Each warning adds 10% to their total. This is the minimum of what you will receive, it is up to the discretion of the mod issuing the warning whether they add bonuses like revoking posting access or moderated posts or whatever else on top of this.

10% - PM
20% - PM
30% - 7 days suspension
40% - 30 days suspension
50% - 90 days suspension
60%+ - probably not on the forum any more.

For high warn level owners, we will probably be in discussions already about their continued presence on the forums.

For people's first offences it's to the discretion of the mod whether their behaviour warrants a full warn or just a friendly, "Oi. Quit it."

All warnings will expire a year after they were issued. Admins will periodically check the warn list for those due to have theirs struck off.

Animated Signatures

Ladies, Gentlemen, and all those somewhere inbetween.

Lately there has been an increase in the number of large, animated .gif files in peoples' signatures. Please keep them to roughly 200Kb maximum. Not every user here is on superfast broadband, and it can be most annoying waiting for a page to load, only to find that it's because someone wants an obscure anime/furry/cartoon clip under every post they make.

Please don't be selfish - think of other users before adding unnecessarily large images/animations. If your signature is deemed oversize, we will notify you by PM, giving you 24 hours to either resize or remove the image. After this time, an Admin or Moderator will remove the image if it has not been rectified.

Grats.

The Management

New Management Of Web Site Development

Hello everyone,

As with many people, those originally selected to redesign the UKFur website have found their lives increasingly busy of late and work on a new UKFur website has ground to a halt.
Because of this the other UKFur Forum moderators have nominated myself to organise the new site.

What and Why

You may recall my intent for the site was rather less ambitious than ideas originally put forward, so please remember that this does not stop people from working on a more advanced website at a later point. This new site may well be only an interim solution until something bigger and better is coded, however it is still required.

We now have a fairly simple deadline. We must have the new website front-end installed and working before RBW. A little over two weeks away.

By use of pre-existing systems, this is easy to do. It won't look especially pretty, but it will work.

The reason for this deadline is that the UKFur Shop wants to be running for the con.

Systems and Jobs Required

The current selection of new systems will be WordPress as the main site's front-end, and ZenCart as the UKFur shop as we have a number of forum members with experience with the system. A freely avaialble redirection plugin will allow WordPress to link to both the forum and the shop though virtual WP "pages" seamlessly.

At this point I would like to have some experienced persons on hand to perform a security audit on the initial set-up to see if there are any readily exploitable security holes that need patching.

While not essential to meet the deadline we will require CSS made up to skin the front-end, shop and forum under the same visual style. Some of the money raised from shop sales will also be commissioning an artist to render the UKFur mascot in a suitable web-style.

Later on we will also need a bridge coding between the Forum's calender system and a WordPress widget so they share the same database.

It has also been suggested that the new site should include a gallery for meet photos and the like. If that goes ahead, scripts will be required to again join the Forums user database to that of the selected gallery.

So the jobs for this project are:

Zen Cart Advisers: Gothicat, Nigefoxx

Security Experts/Hackers:

CSS/PHP Coder: Baloki

Graphic Artist: Muzz

Cross-Database Coders: Blueberry

Because money becomes involved, I am not inclined to combine user entries into the web-shop in case one of the other points of entry becomes compromised. Likewise the WP front-end will require that only Admin/Moderator level users are carried over to it with posting privileges. For sanitys sake, comments will need disabling or redirecting into forum posts.

The timeline will be as follows:

Installation of Wordpress, ZenCart, IPB (empty) with redirection script on test-server.

Initial security audit

Transfer of setup directly to UKFur server.

Secondary audit

Base CSS (full graphics to be added (aka Stickfigure mode))

Calender code

Cross-database user setup

Installation of gallery, additional graphics as obtained

If you feel you can manage any of the jobs listed, please say so and we'll get you started on specifics.
Also if you have any experience with the particulars of the systems we'll currently be going with, please put your hand up and make mention of anything we need to be made aware of.

I look forward to working with you all. We only have to reach stage 3 inside the next 19 days, so this should be fairly straightforward.

~ Sci

Cull finished. Wewt. If any of your friends are complaining their accounts don't exist any more, apologise, and get them to create another. I will look at every account individually for last posting date and last seen, and if I haven't received an email to keep certain accounts, they are going bye bye.

Wish me luck.

--

Hello,

The ukFur forums are planning a mass cull of all inactive accounts. The parameters for this inital cull are all accounts not posted in since 31st Dec 2006, and with less than 10 posts. If you have not visited the forums recently, and wish to keep your account, or know that any accounts of your friends should be kept, please contact Kytheraen by PM on the forums, or by email at kytheraen@hotmail.com. Please title your reply with "Account Cull - [account name]".

If you have been active on the forums within the last 18 months, your account will be safe and do not worry.

Thanks for your time,

ukFur Board Staff

This thread will contain all action taken by staff on members of the board for <strike>being little snots</strike> breaking the rules. If anyone has any contests to the action we have taken, let us know.

First off, DarkPhox - his signature was removed due to offending several members of the board. He replaced it with a similar picture, flaunting his warning. This picture was removed and replaced two further times, and following the latest replacement he has earned himself a 72 hour suspension for ignoring our warnings.

Well, he's just added abuse to the mod team to his list of naughties. Thank you LJ.

Reporting Posts

The moderators and admin have been recieving a LOT of Reported Post messages recently.
Quite often, no one can even tell WHY they've been sent the message, as whatever infraction has been so small that it hardly seems worth reporting.

If it continues with repeat offenders we'll have to start removing PM and reporting priveliges.

Please consider whether you think the infraction warrants a deletion or closure of posting or threads before you use the button. If you're unsure, please feel free to send a PM to myself or any other moderator, and we'll deal with it there and then if it needs it. You can find a list of mods under the Members tab.

Please be aware that the mods get exactly the same amount of space as everyone else, so all those report PMs soon fill up their space!
